True North vs. Magnetic North
Did you know there are two types of north: True North and Magnetic North?
True North is a fixed point on the globe, while Magnetic North is the direction a compass needle points. Interestingly, the Magnetic North Pole shifts over time in response to changes in the Earth’s magnetic core.
On Earth, magnetic poles are important because everything is oriented around the Earth’s magnetic field, also known as the geomagnetic field. If you want to navigate to True North using a compass, you must calibrate your instruments to stay on the correct path.
When I began taking flight lessons years ago, I learned how to fly to a destination using paper aviation maps, which are based on True North, alongside a compass that points to Magnetic North. Eventually, the Global Positioning System (GPS), a satellite-based hyperbolic navigation system, became widely available and made navigation easier and more automatic.
Feng Shui and Directional Alignment
I use a similar process when conducting Feng Shui analyses. In Feng Shui, a geomantic compass, known as a luopan, is traditionally used to determine the precise direction of a structure based on Magnetic North and the geomagnetic field, rather than True North.
Today, it is common to use online maps, such as Google Maps, especially when a building is located far away and not within driving distance. Because maps use True North, we must calculate the magnetic declination for each specific location to ensure accuracy.
The Divine Heart Compass
I have always loved working with a compass and a map, and I apply this same concept to our inner being. Our hearts contain a kind of cosmic compass, which I call the Divine Heart Compass. It always points us toward the Divine Heart.
Human beings contain a cosmos within. We are a microcosm: the physical body reflects the universe, and the human mind reflects divine consciousness. We are a divine conduit connecting Heaven and Earth.
The Divine Heart Compass serves as a navigation tool, guiding us through the vastness of the Divine Cosmos and Divine Consciousness. For it to point to True North and the Divine Heart, it must be properly calibrated to guide our souls.
Calibrating the Inner Compass
So how can we ensure that our compass is working accurately and in optimal condition? Here, I draw again from my aviation experience.
