Meeting Saint Hildegard von Bingen: The Saint I Didn’t Know I Was Waiting For
Some people discover a historical figure. Others discover a kindred spirit. That’s exactly what happened when I was introduced to Saint Hildegard von Bingen.
The moment I “met” her, my spirit was immediately uplifted. The more I learn about St. Hildegard, the more mesmerized I become and the more deeply I am drawn to her energy. I am completely fascinated! I feel such a strong connection to her.
Since then, I’ve been like a little child who discovers something wonderful and can’t wait to tell everyone she meets. Honestly, I’m surprised I had never heard of her before now. Then a friend said something that made perfect sense:
“St. Hildegard visits those who are ready to receive her.”
That explains it all.
So, if you’re reading this blog and discovering St. Hildegard for the first time, perhaps you, too, are ready to receive her.
A Woman Far Ahead of Her Time
As I continue connecting with her energy, I often wonder what she would be like if she were born today.
St. Hildegard was born into a noble family as Hildegard of Bingen in 1098. At the age of 18, she became a Benedictine nun at the Monastery of Saint Disibodenberg. She died on September 17, 1179, at Rupertsberg near Bingen and was canonized on May 10, 2012.
So, who was St. Hildegard, and what did she accomplish during her time on Earth?
The answer is: an incredible amount.
She was a Catholic nun, writer, poet, composer, philosopher, mystic, visionary, doctor, herbalist, and so much more. Apparently, her beer recipe is the oldest known recipe to include hops.
She actually reminds me of Leonardo da Vinci. Different era, different calling, but both possessed remarkable gifts, a deep understanding of the world, and an extraordinary ability to help others understand God. St. Hildegard had so many dimensions to her life that almost anyone can find something in her story that resonates with them.
On October 7, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI named St. Hildegard a Doctor of the Church in recognition of “her holiness of life and the originality of her teaching.”
A Holistic Understanding of God’s Creation
One of the reasons I feel so connected to St. Hildegard is her holistic understanding of God’s creation.
She cherished creation in the truest sense. Her understanding of the world and the universe was deeply rooted in nature and closely connected to the human body.
This is where I resonate with her the most—her devotion to spiritual healing, energy attunement, and nutritional health. She even worked with crystals!
I deeply appreciate the way St. Hildegard understood God’s creations and partnered with them in her work.
“The soul in the body is like sap in a tree, and the soul’s powers are like the form of a tree… The intellect in the soul is like the greenery of the tree’s branches and leaves, the will like its flowers, the mind like its bursting first fruits, the reason like the perfected mature fruit, and the senses like its size and shape. And so a person’s body is strengthened and sustained by the soul. Hence, O human, understand what you are in your soul…”
Bridging Faith and Spiritual Practice
In today’s world, where we are collectively still exploring who God is, His creation, humanity, the universe, and the cosmos, so much remains compartmentalized.
Within me, my Christian/Catholic faith and my energy work are seamlessly woven together. They are simply part of who I am and make complete sense together. Externally, however, those two worlds often remain separate.
Try talking about Feng Shui, crystal healing, or tarot with my Catholic women’s group! It’s like speaking two languages fluently but never finding a country where both are official languages.
St. Hildegard spoke both of my languages—and many more.
My faith in God is my foundation, just as it was for St. Hildegard. As much as I love the work I do, I would never have known about St. Hildegard if it weren’t for one of my sisters in the Sodality, my Catholic women’s group. She discovered St. Hildegard through her musical gifts.
Unfortunately, sometimes religions disregard anything outside their own teachings and may even dismiss Divine Heart. I appreciate the beautiful rituals of the Catholic Mass, but I don’t believe they are the only way to know God. Church is sacred, but I don’t believe it is the only place where we can worship God and commune with Him.
After all, St. Hildegard was a Catholic nun who also practiced energy healing.
Feeling Guided by St. Hildegard
Because of this, I truly believe St. Hildegard is here to support my work. It feels deeply right to me.
During my Summer Solstice reading, I asked, “What am I going to harvest during the darker time of the year?” The card I drew was the Hierophant, surrounded by symbols from many religions.
I interpreted this as a message to go beyond religion—or perhaps above the divisions between religions—and recognize the deeper spiritual truth that unites them.
Now that I have met St. Hildegard, I feel awakened, aligned, ascended, and activated—all at once through the Divine Heart Spiritual Management System (Divine Heart SMS) process.
I have a feeling this is only the beginning of my journey with St. Hildegard, and I look forward to discovering where her guidance leads next.
This is a beautiful testament to someone who made a huge and lasting impact in the world, but is often overlooked. What I appreciate most about her is her commitment and cleverness. She was consistent in her explorations and worked in the paradigm of her time (religion). She is still a role model today for bridging the material world and the ethereal one.
